Is an HPI check worth it?

Yes, for the four things it checks. Outstanding finance, insurance write-off, stolen marker and mileage discrepancy are the four ways a used car can be a disaster that looks fine on the driveway, and £19.99 against a four-figure mistake is an easy call. It is not worth it as the Basic, rarely worth it on an AutoTrader listing, and never a condition check.

Worth it

A private sale. No dealer, no consumer-rights fallback, no one else has checked. A private seller can still owe money on the car, and the finance company’s interest survives the sale.
A car that isn’t on AutoTrader. Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, eBay, a card in a window: nothing has been checked for you.
A price that looks too good. The cheapest cars in any search are cheap for a reason, and a write-off history is the most common one.
You want the biggest name on the guarantee. HPI’s £30,000 cover on the Full check is real, and no challenger matches the headline figure.

Not worth it

The Basic, at any price. HPI’s £9.99 tier excludes mileage and write-off detail; not covered by the guarantee. Buy the Full or buy something else.
An AutoTrader listing. The free five-point flag is on every advert, and £5.95 adds finance and MOT history with a guarantee. HPI on top is paying twice.

What the £30,000 guarantee actually covers

It is a guarantee of the data: if the check said no finance and there was finance, you can claim. HPI’s own schedule, read out:

None of that makes it worthless. It pays out for the finance and stolen cases it was designed for. It does mean the guarantee alone is a weak reason to pay £19.99 over £14.99 (RAC), £9.99 (Total Car Check Gold) or £5.95 (AutoTrader), which carry cover of the same shape.

The one thing it can’t do

“HPI check” has become the word for any car check, the way “Hoover” means a vacuum, so buyers ask whether it’s worth it as if it answered the whole question. It answers one half. An HPI check reads registers. The clutch, the gearbox, the suspension arms, the rust under the sills, the wet belt on a Ford 1.0 EcoBoost: none of those are on a register, and a clean HPI says nothing about any of them. What to do instead of buying one twice

Read the free record first. The DVSA MOT history and the DVLA record cost nothing and take a minute. A car that fails here doesn’t need a paid check.
Then one register check. HPI Full, RAC, Total Car Check Gold, or the AutoTrader one if it’s listed there. Not two.
Then decide what the car is worth to you.
